Temporary Chain guide for 1x9

Hi guys,

I've just built up a Cotic soul with the intention of running it 1x9. However, having encountered problems with a e-thirteen xcx chain guide, i face the problem of finding a compatible chainset to fit together with it. Until i can afford a shiny new singlespeed chainset, would the following front derailleur do for a chain guide on a 32t chain ring? (i know it says 44/48t but i think that applies to a double chainset. Also, the soul has a 28.6mm seat tube does the "28.6 & 34.9" mean its adjustable?)

i'm looking for a cheap, quick, temporary fix, and advice would be much appreciated to prevent me wasting more money :)

Cheers,

Sam

Any chance of using a bb mounted one? Like a Blackspire stinger or whatever.

Superstar XCR, £14, BB mount, job done.

  • What's the issue with the MRP? I would presume the Superstar one would give you the same problem as they are pretty similar.

In answer to your question, the Deore one you linked to would do fine, the 44/48 relates the the largest ring size (I believe) and it comes with shims to reduce down to 28.6

Actually, that is a point, how is the XCX not compatible with your chainset? If it's on a single 32t chainring, I see no reason why it should not be compatible.

  • thanks for the responses guys, the problem is hard to explain but when the chain guide is mounted between the frame and the external bottom bracket cup, the chain ring is about 3mm too far outwards from the frame in the chain guide, so the chain won't fit on. spacers were provided but they only move the whole thing (chainset + bottom bracket cup + chain guide) outwards so the problem remains. It is possible to move the spacers so that the chainring is further away, but i need the opposite :?

it looks like i might need to get the deore front mech, does that act worse than a specific chain guide, or is it just heavier?

the superstar one looks like the same design unfortunately, but thanks for the ideas anyway :)

I think I just had the same problem that your talking about. Did you try adding the spacers to the non drive side? I have just done this with the superstar chain device, and it fits perfectly now.

On topic, any front mech that will fit your frame will do the job, I'm using a Shimano Sora front mech (road mechs are lighter and look 'nicer' than MTB ones I think) as a chain guide.

Back to your problem, what chainline are you running? Have you got the one ring too far out or fitted in the 'middle' location as you should?

  • @Toby_Winkler - adding spaces on the non-drive side won't move the chain guide further towards the chain ring though...

@The Beginner - yeah, its on the middle ring of a triple chainset

OK have you measured the chainline (centre of seatube to centre of ring - should be between 45 and 50mm on most bikes)

How many spacers do you usually have on your drive side without the chain guide?

I think you can get spacers for the chainring bolts,to push the chainring back a bit? I'll have a look into that...

  • the chainline is 55mm, so that may be whats causing it... i don't know if the chain set is to blame...

i thought about chainring bolt spacers too but i'm told they dramatically increase the stress on the bolts and can cause your chainring to shear off, not something i'm willing to risk to be honest

55mm is a bit big and could well be your problem, what chainset is it? Internal or external BB?
