Another Excel Query!!!

Running Excel 2000, not sure if same on all systems but....
As I see it, if you right click a cell and format it to GENERAL, it should be GENERAL, as in it should not matter what you type in here, you get what you type.
However I doing a shift pattern and wanted to add
10-2200 to a cell but Excel assumes this is a DATE and changes it to OCT-00. When right clicking the cell again it has defaulted to DATE and not on GENERAL anymore!! Any way around this with out changing the Data input as I am aware that if I type 1000-2200 this problem does not happen so its fine, but what if I really really wanted 10-2200!!??!!

try putting an apostrophe ' before what you want in the cell - this should mean its treated as text rather than a date0
