what to replace a peugeot elan with?

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Wondering what advice anyone has regarding what to replace a very old but great Peugeot Elan with? It's getting towards the end of it's life I fear, starting to cost more to keep going than is reasonable. It's my partner's bike - he rides it on roads, and carries a laptop and kit in paniers on the back. Interested in people's views on this.
