Bottom bracket, hub & chainring maintenance help?

Hi guys,
I have a 2002 Kona Blast MTB. After several years as my daily commute (on slick tyres) it’s time for some much needed maintenance. As far as I can tell it needs a new bottom bracket cartridge and new rear hub (or at least the hub overhauling with new cones?). I’d also like to increase the size of the chainring, with 42 teeth, the big ring isn’t really big enough.
I’m not sure exactly what components to buy though. Could someone help me out by suggesting what components I need to buy, and what tools I need. A bottom bracket tool? Any special tool for working on the hub?
Thanks

What is the current chainset and what hub?
If you are unlucky and haven`t kept on top of maintenance with cup and cone bearings the internal faces may well be grooved or pitted in which case its often cheaper to buy a new wheel than to have a wheel built on to a new hub.
If you are lucky ,ou might get away with new ball bearings and a repack with new grease, once cleaned up.
You can sometimes buy just a new chainring if you need to go bigger, but need to know what you have.
If the bb is knackered and the thr ring just buy a complete Shimano Deore chainset.Again often cheaper than buying the bits sepearately and likley to be a bit of an upgrade over what you have.2006 Giant XTC

I don't really know any more about what I currently have than what it says on the Kona Blast description above.
Okay, so a Shimano Deore 175mm 4-Bolt 26.36.48 url=http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40496]link[/url, would sort me out at the front end. Which cartridge do I need, the Shimano Deore Bottom Bracket Cups M530/532/590 url=http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=34674]link[/url?0 -
Firstly if that Chainset is a HTII then are you sure you want the ring set - that's oversize 'normal is 22-32-44
If it is HTII check on the description and see if if lists BB included - should do.
Then there's facing.0 -

Sorry, I don't quite follow, my ignorance. What's the importance of HTII? I'd like the oversize chainset as on the current normal 22-32-44 I run out of gears around 30mph. I don't think the chainset I linked to above includes a bottom bracket? Are the two items I linked (a) compatible with each other, (b) compatible with my frame and (c) all I need at that end?
Sorry for all the questions, I never really looked into this stuff before.0 -
It says the BB is included in your link
HT11 uses a different style BB (& tool) than the one that'll currently be on your bike so it might be cheaper to get your LBS to remove & fit. You'll want the frame facing too which they'll be able to do.Statistically, Six Out Of Seven Dwarves Aren't Happy0 -
What does frame facing involve? How do I know which BB tool I need, is this the right one url=http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=42809]link[/url?0

If you want to just replace the bottom bracket, you need this :http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=21496
If you want to get higher gearing then your options are to see if you can source1) larger rings for your current Truvativ 5d,or 2) just buy the complete larger ringed Deore chainset.
The newer Deore chainsets are HT2 and come with an external bearing bottom bracket, whcih is included.
With this type of bottom bracket the bearing cups sit outside rather than inside the bottom bracket and rely on the external faces of the bottom bracket being perfectly aligned. This is done by "facing" which involves a special tool being used to take off any surplus, and is a bike shop job.

I paid £15 to have my external bb faced, and installed about 3 years ago.

Thanks Spiderman, I think the fog is clearing. Seems I have two options, just replace the TruVativ bottom bracket with the one you linked to, then either leave the chainrings as they are, or try and find a new larger chainring. OR replace the lot with a new Shimano HTII crankset, which needs the frame facing due to the external nature of the BB.
For the first option I need to work out if I need 68 or 73mm, and 108, 113 or 118mm BB. I'd need three tools for this job? A bottom bracket tool like this? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=10177
An 8mm Allen key and a crank puller like this?

For the Shimano HTII option, I'd still need to remove the old stuff, and in addition I'd need the tools for HTII?0 -
Measured the bike today, it looks like 68mm is the one to go for. But what about 108, 113 or 118mm?0

Measure the bb axle when removed.
I think 108 tends to be road bike, probably 113 or 118 but measure to make sure.Unfortunately that means you need to remove it first.
Yes,for HT2 external you need the tool to install the cups. The good news is the bb is included and once you have the cups in it is very easy.Just be very, very careful to make sure you get the right number of spacers each side and don`t overload the preload, when you install the cranks.
Take up the slack and no more, otherwise your new bearings will be shot in no time.
If you need to go to a shop to get the bb faced, you may aswell get them to fit the bb and cranks for you aswel,as its a 5 min job and would cost little more than the cost of "facing".
But if you do choose the diy route then ,yes those are the tools.Depnds if you are likely to be swapping bb and cranks on a regular basis I suppose, or have other bikes.2006 Giant XTC
