How narrow can I go?

Starting to plan for the better spring weather and planning to swap my tyres out.

Currently running Schwalbe Rocket Ron/Racing Ralph 35x622's on my Cube X-Race Comp and just wondered if there is a limit on how narrow a tyre my Easton EA30 Custom rims will take?

  • Max and Min should be marked on your rims. Alternatively, take a look at the table at the bottom of this article and you should find the answer:

Don't go narrower than the width of your rims but it's a fallacy that narrow tyres = faster, but I can guarantee more discomfort, less grip and more punctures!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I can't imagine anyone wanting to go lower than 23 for road racing/recreational type cycling.

There are no min/max tyre widths marked on my Easton EA50s - they have 13mm internal rim width, so from Mr Brown's table should I not run 32mm Armadillo Borough CX tyres on them? :?

By width of rim, I mean external width so typically nothing less than 20mm for a 700c road rim. I run up to 35mm cross tyres on Open Pros which is about the max as the tyre starts deforming and loses lateral grip in soft conditions / low pressures - at higher pressures it is less of an issue.

  • Same wheels on the womens Cube 2011 Road bike show 25mm.

It's fairly pointless going any narrower then 25mm in my opinion and I can't work out what's faster 23mm or 25mm on any of my bikes. However, the 25mm is much more comfortable and reassuringly tougher.

Cheers, was thinking 25's but was worried the custom rims may have been CX specific and not take lower than 28's or something!
