Can anyone recommend routes/maps/places of interest to go touring with my tandem to Ireland 2011. This will be a two week trip getting off the boat in Dublin and them setting off. This will be my first trip and as you can imagine wet behind the ears so any advice or pointing in the right direction will be most useful
many thanks

Many, many years ago I went to Ireland as an inexperienced cyclist and rode from Cork along the south coast, round Kerry and up the west coast to Galway.
I got the train from Dublin to Cork and back from Galway and stayed in hostels or b&b.

The scenery was fantastic and I met some very nice people. I covered 520 miles in 10 days so I didn't break any records but if I had 2 weeks I'd like to include the Wicklow Mtns.

You'll be fine, it's a great place to start.

SW Cork is a great place for riding. Dont miss out the peninsulars, they make good day rides.
The Ring of Kerry is a big tourist draw with lots of coaches. I went over rather than around.
The Arran Isles are another high point.
  • Originally from Ireland...so the route i would recommend would be similar as to previously mentioned...Dublin to Waterford via Wicklow Mountains, then south coast all the way to ocrk and around the Ring of Kerry. Visit cliffs of Moher and relax and drink in Galway...
Not sure you will have much time then to go north of galway and into Connemara and West Mayo.
Achill Island is a lovely spot.

Worth looking at what some of tours holiday companies do. Very useful for ideas and stop off points...

    Have a great trip...
  • Almost anywhere on the west coast is great. Dingle penninsula and also Connemara are beautiful cycling country. Avoid the Ring of Kerry at busy tourist times. The constant passage of coach tours makes the riding unpleasant and scary.

In the North the Antrim coast around to Derry and then on to Mallin takes some beating.
  • My journal from a few years ago is here... you may get an idea of what it's like in the places already mentioned:

You might have a problem putting a tandem on a train - or bus - so don't bank on doing that.
It's an uphill climb to the bottom
  • Thanks to all who posted. Food for thought.
