I'm thinking to convert my 29er to a 1x9 set up.
Any one know of a supplier for custom gears iin the UK?
I'm thinking of a 11-38 combo with 26 on the front, I know shimano do a 12 -36.
Will a Tiagra derailluer 9 speed work with this combo or will I need a mid cage derailluer?
Many thanks

  • Rear mechs have a max rear sprocket mix. IIRC a 105 is 27 - so that mech is out for this.

26 on the front? - are you building a hill climb bike :?

Use my granny alot, even using the lowest combo 36 rear and 26 I get a gain ratio of 1.5 which is still higher than my 34 rear 22 front combo at the moment.

Unless you go 1x10, this is the only way I could find of going 1x9 with 36t http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BIG-RANGE-11-36-T ... 256117a13f

You could get the 38t big wheel you see on ebayand add to your cassette, think they come from Australia.

Yep, I rarely use the lowest gear on the middle ring at the mo which is a 6.1 ratio (32-11), only down hill , I' d rather spin out and still climb. That's why I'm after cutom gears, I can play around a bit.
So it looks like I have to use a mid cage derailluer? Any other possiblities?

  • Struggling to workout what you are trying to achieve.

Are you sure you're not after a 2x?? setup?

Which I've modded by splitting it and putting the 36 on an XT

Basicly I have a On One ti 29er, now marketed as a single speed, because there is little clearance between the chain stay, and when mud gets involved I always get the chain jammed, yes with new chain and sprockets, so the idea was to pack out the drive side and run a 1x9.
Or get an Alfine, but reports are coming thru that the new 11 is busting in low gears and they are heavy.

  • You modded an XT Cassette to change the 32/34 sprocket with a 36 from another?

Racing with it for the last year mate, no worries. Removing the pins does not mean the ring will flex and damage the hub.
