Steerer tube length.....

Ok......complete newbie to bike building and I'm going to upgrade the Manitou fork on my Ltd Pro so I'm looking for a second hand reba or sid team......can anyone tell me what minimum steerer tube length I'll need for the 2010 Ltd Pro to save me stripping down my bike and measuring.......? Or is there an easy way of measuring on the bike.......is it as simple as from the top of the fork to the top of my headset?

measure from bottom of headset/fork crown to top of stem, add a bit for safety and ability to run spacers for adjusting stem height if needs be,
