Need a cheap rack for a short motorway journey once a month....
Saris Solo looks perfect - Anyone own one/used one? Any good?
Is there any issue with the bike swinging into the car when braking?

Yes, I bought one a few weeks ago, very easy to setup and take down and it works well. The only scary bit was that at speed on the motorway the bike went horizontal if you can picture what I mean. Now I use the excess cord to tether the bike and use a couple of bungee cords for good measure. It's small enough that it sits in the boot the whole time when unused.
I didn't notice any problems with the bike bumping/scratching the back of the car under load or breaking, tethered or not.

Cheers - how/where do you attach the bungees/cord to stop it going horizontal? I have read this elsewhere but can't "picture" it? Grateful for any info, cheersCervelo P3

As with any bike rack the bike sits on the restraints verticality and is attached by effectively two (large) cable ties to the top tube. Even when stationary you can lift the bike towards you by the wheels and the bike is in a different plane but still attached to the tie wraps.
Not sure if it is a combination of speed or wind or both but that effect can happen whilst travelling. With my car there is enough excess on the cords that supply tension to wrap it round the bike frame and secure it back on to the rack itself. For good measure I just add a couple of bungee cords that go from the top of the hatchback to the bottom of the boot.0 -
Ahh with you now - great cheers, sounds like a winner (if you only need to transport one bike!)Cervelo P3

I've got a Saris Bones 3.
I've never had an issue with bikes moving into a different plane or rotating when on the rack. There's a strap for the seat tube and as long as you tighten this properly, the bikes stay put. Never needed a bungee.
It's a great rack, I've had three bikes on it with no problem. If you can find a second hand one within your budget, go for it !!!!Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.
