Hey all,

I'm off to Majorca in April for my first ever cycling holiday. Staying in Palma for 6 nights with a friend, and am hoping to get 5 full days of cycling.

Has anyone been to Majorca before? Could anyone recommend any routes? Any general advice would be much appreciated!

  • lucky chap,

have a nice time & bring some sun back please
  • Hi, have been going to Majorca in April/Mayfor last 3 years with friends & have always stayed in area where you're going. I'd start off by saying to avoid central Palma if poss (v.busy).

What sort of rides are you looking to do there? are you looking to do hilly rides?
Check out Sa Calobra video on YT as a taster.
  • I have to agree with pablojag, Palma isn't the best place to stay if you want to ride, it's a very busy city. I have been going to marjorca for the past 5 years. I stay in the port de Pollensa region, it's the top north east part of the island, there's a lovely coastal route. There is also a Bike Hire shop in Port De Pollensa so you can hire a road bike for not very much, saves you the hastle of lugging your own kit. That's what I do, hire a bike for 5 days.. The shop should be easy enough to find, it's also owned by english people so it's easy to sort the type of bike you require..

I think the shop was the above. Try them any way - if you do go to Port De Pollensa.

    Good luck with the ride...

    Hi guys,

    thanks!

I've been a complete muppet though - it's not Palma I'm staying in. I misread the email my friend had sent me. We're booked into a hotel near Puerto de Alcudia (which looks like its at the north east side of the island).

As for what sort of ride I'm looking for - I'm actually pretty open... this is gonna be my first ever cycling holiday. I regularly ride my road bike (around 20 miles a day commute, and around 100 over the weekend) in and around London, but have never experienced any significant hills over something like 2 miles in length...
So, I guess I'd like a nice mix of terrain. I'd love the opportunity to try some hills (I just hope I can handle them!!)

Alcudia is a great base for rides. You can do flat rides (anywhere heading east), hilly rides (e.g. the must do ride to the lighthouse on Formentor Cape) and mountainous rides (head southwest and you can climb your heart out!). It is a cyclist's paradise there and you will probably see dozens of other cyclists on any of your outings. Enjoy it!

  • Get yourself a Michelin map of Majorca to work out your rides, thats the best one around & fits in back pocket too.
Must do climbs (from what i've done) include Soller, Puig Major (highest on island), Calobra (check out top of climb where road loops under itself), the Orient, Valldemossa.
A mate said the descent into Pollenca is long & amazing (from Puig Major direction), easy from where you're staying.
  • My wife and I have done winter tours in Mallorca for the last 3 years (sadly I shall miss going this year for family reasons). This is a brief blog of last year's tour it may have information that will help. http://www.by-bike.co.uk/mallorca.htm

If you have specific questions let me know.
