Quick question b4 I attempt a fix.
On my new bike I have a small amount of lateral play which I've located to be coming from the freewheel.
Should I tighten body fixing bolt #16 or preload the bearings #17 more?
Also is there a better side to undo first or adjust or any other tips which will help me not make a pigs ear of what should b a simple task?

Cheers in advance

i would be very surprised if that bolt was loose.

are you sure it is not the cassette lock ring?
    or the bearings lock nuts?

I did think cassette locking ring 1st it is ok
With the cassette carrier only I can rock the freewheel back and forth it is not massive movement (But i can see it)
My hope hub on my other bike is solid so makes me think something is either loose or not set right.
Anyone know what size Allen key fits the body fixing bolt, better check I've got the correct tools b4 starting.
Should you apply lock thread to the fixing bolt?
I might check bearing preload first but the nuts are not loose & it does feel set right.

    Cheers

the bolt that holds the freehub on is a 10mm allen.

i have the same hub, and theres always been a little bit of movement where you describe. even after a complete rebuild and new freehub its still there. once the cassette is on tight, and the wheel is clamped in the frame, its all tight enough not to worry about it
  • The driveside locknuts on the hub cones have been working loose on M525 hubs for the last 2 years IME.
do a hub service and check the tube nut on the freehub while you're in there, but I reckon tightening the cone/locknut on the driveside while it's out of the hub and rebuilding itwill sort your problem.
If the tubenut has worked loose, the hub is usually fecked. as the threads will be stripped.
  • I found nothing really wrong in the end the body fixing bolt was not loose but I tightened it a bit further didn't go nuts.
Reassembled & adjusted the cone locknut but the amount of play in the freewheel afterwards was unchanged.

A minor disappointment in the M525 not sure what else I could try, figure the tolerances are a little slack on this hub/freewheel?
