Hi Folks, I have just bought a second hand pair of Fulcrum Racing Zero's which appears to have a 7800 Dura ace free wheel. Consequently the SRAM cassette I have just bought won't fit and neither will standard shimano! Its definately shamano not Campag. Will i have to buy a dura Ace cassette now and if so will it be compatible with the rest of the drive train which is ultegra which I am running with a SRAM chain which i find better than Shimano's . I got the wheels for a really good price and they ar ein superb condition but I am loathe to spend £160 for a dura ace cassette. Otherwise I guess its rebuild the wheel onto an shimano/SRAM compatible hub.

All advice gratefully received

  • SRAM fits Shimano. If a SRAM cassette won't fit, it isn't a Shimano freehub. It can only be fitted one way though so make sure you are fitting it correctly.

If it isn't fitting, it will be a Campagnolo freehub -Shimano ones are available so just go buy one of those.

I have a spare shimano pattern freehub for fulcrum zero wheels which definitely fits ultegra 10 speed cassettes. not sure about sram, but the ultegra casettes are about £45

Fulcrum wheels are supplied with either of the following freehub bodies:

    Campag 9/10/11 speed
    Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10 speed
    Shimano 10 speed only

If it's definitely a Shimano pattern but a SRAM cassette won't fit, it's likely to be the Shimano 10 speed only freehub.

It's odd that you say a standard Shimano cassette won't fit. All 10 speed Shimano cassettes are an identical fitment, so if an Ultegra or 105 won't fit then a Dura-Ace won't either.

Can you post a picture of the freehub?

  • Cheers Guys I can only think its a Campag hub despite my 'mate' who sold them to me said it was shimano. I have checked it against a shimano freewheel on a spare set of mavic kysiriums and theyare soooo different. My fault I should have checked more closely but then againnvvendor is a mate. I will be seeing him tomorrow to sort out.

Mrdsgs, You mentioned you had a spare Fulcrum zero shimano hub. Is it red by any chance? If so I am interested.

    Cheers Spagforth  :?

no, the freehubs are not red, they are a dull steel/metal colour whereas the campag one are shiny alloy, much deeper splines and one distinctive stepped L shaped spline/grove.

    Campagnolo make fulcrum wheels.

The distinctive feature of the axle circumference is that is is not fully round. Similarly the inside of the freehub axle hole has a couple of flat spots so you have to line them up when fitting and removing.

My zeros are, I think 2 years old and the spare freehub is boxed and other than checking it fitted it has not been used. It will definitely take an ultegra 10 speed cassette but I cannot guarantee it will fit your rear hub without knowing the age of your wheels.

th simplest thing to do is to take your freehub off and post a photo of the underside of it, and the side view. I would then be able to confirm compatibility.

oh by the way, yes the HUB is red but we are taking about just the replaceable bit that the cassette fits onto (the freehub) that is what I have a spare of. Swapping them is very easy.
