XTR M970 cable tightening bolt threaded

I was just fixing a new cable to my front deralliur. I was tightening the bolt that holds the cable in place and it threaded. The bolt itself is fine. Its threaded inside.
Is there any way I can fix it before I order a new front deralliur? I find this a bit strange because I thought Shimano would make the thread on the bolt slightly softer. That way the bolt would thread first and it would be easier to repair.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

So have you got the bolt out? Just run a tap through it, it'll probably be fine.

I'd recommend being less ham fisted next time.
  • on my old XT one i had the same issue, to start with simple bodge fix with a longer bolt and small nut, then lightly drilled it, tapped and popped a bigger bolt in, worked a treat! still going strong a couple of years on!!
    Timmo.

  • I have got the bolt out. The bolt was fine. It is the thread inside that is damaged.
  • Unlike XT it's a blind M5 thread. Not able to run a bolt thru and out the back of it.
Try and re thread it with a M6 bolt an a washer before binning it.
  • Thanks for the advice kevolution. I'll go shopping later to my lbc and see if they have anything.
