Covering a bike under home insurance

Evening all,

Not sure if this is the right place for this post but here we go anyway...

I've just moved into a new place and need to insure my bike. The question is, will insurers be prepared to cover it against theft under a home contents insurance policy given where I keep it?

I'll explain. We live in a 2 bedroom flat. There's absolutely no way my other half will allow me to keep the bike indoors (!), we don't have a garage and the management company who look after the flats won't let us put a shed/bike storage box in the communal garden.

The only place I can leave our bikes is in a shared hallway. To give you an idea of what this looks like/how secure it is, our flat is one of four in a two storey block - 2 flats on the ground floor, two (inc. ours) on the first floor. All four flats have front doors leading off this hallway, with doors to the front garden area and back garden at either end. Our bikes are currently locked to each other at one end of this hallway. They are then locked to a ground anchor set into a concrete block, the idea being that anyone who wants to just pick them up and remove them can't as they wouldn' t be able to get four bikes and a whopping great lump of concrete through the doorway! Not the most secure set-up in the world but the best I think I can do in the circumstances as I'm not allowed to attach anything to the floor or walls to lock them to.

Anyhows, the question is, will any insurers cover the bikes if they are stored like this? Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give. And no, moving isn't an option at this stage. ;-)

Put your foot down, tell her that if it does get stolen due to it being outdoors then its on her head. And you will be grumpy for a long time haha.
Though couldn't you reduce the size of it by taking wheels off etc and storing it in a cuboard, unless you use it every day for commuting etc.

@ Biggus86 - is Cosford still open? Thought they'd closed it...

    Haha, very simple.

And yeah, I can't see it closing, its the main station for all trainee technicians.
As for the trades, I don't have a clue what trades are open for people to apply for atm, not many I assume
