I've got myself a Garmin and it reckons that The Ave (in Greenwich Park) reaches 10.1% gradient at one point

Sound right?

  • Sounds about right. Not very long though.

  • When the park is open I ride that way... Not sure about the gradient, but it does get steeper near the top before it flattens out at the wooden gates....

    Cheers!

Just trying to get a feel for high reliable the gradient data it displays as i ride is.

Generally it seems relatively accurate. Difficult to judge absolute accuracy without OS Maps to compare.

You could always use one of the online route tools (mapmyride, etc.) and see if it reflects what the Garmin is telling you. Bear in mind that all the online tools average to some degree hence only use the minimum distance required for the actual hill.

Personally I don't think it hits 10%, though I have not taken my Garmin up it, it just does not feel that steep. Maze Hill however when the the Park is shut certainly does.

The Garmin actually gives a max grade of 8.9%

When I view the route in Google Earth, it gives a max grade of 10.1%

I don't have the Google Earth trace for Maze Hill but the Garmin gives it a max grade of 10.5%

  • ooooh clever, how did you do that?

Did you use Garmin Connect to open your ride in Google Earth? What did you have to do after that?

I'm using Garmin Training Centre 3.1.4 on Mac OSX 10.6.6. You need to have Google Earth installed.

Select your ride and then go to the View menu and select 'View Selected Data in Google Earth'. Google Earth will open showing the GPS of your route. You can right click and select 'Show Elevation Profile'.

Just for info, Vanbrugh Hill hits 17.4% between Restell Close & Dinsdale road. It's only 300m but always a challenge to see the biggest gear you dare use and the shortest time you can get up it.

I only have one gear (48x18) and I must admit it's not ideal.

9-10% sounds about right, and Maze Hill is certainly a bit steeper. I think Crooms Hill on the other side is even steeper though.
