Threaded to threadless adapter question

I've had a search for advice on here, but can't find anything.

I've just bought and (almost) fitted one of these...
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/profile-quill-to-threadless-stem-converter/

on a 1996 GT Outpost with threaded 1" headset/fork.

There were no instructions with it, but I've basically fitted it in the steerer tube, but I'm not sure if I'm meant to just put the old spacers back on, then a new spacer between the headset and the stem, or if I've done it wrong, and it should be deeper into the head-tube and hence not need spacers.

Any advice or recollections of fitting one of these appreciated!

you should have only removed the quill stem. nothing else.

then fit that. (if the top "cap" does not remove) with the stem fitted. no spacers needed at all.

i couldent fit spacers on mine, the ahead stem took up all of the 1.1/8 diameter bit of the adaptor...

i seem to remember some upwards adjustment of the whole thing looked possible but this would have left a section of the 1 inch bit showing which would have looked odd, 1 1/8 spacers there would have rattled around

also i wanted as much as possiblle in the head tube for strength.

i concluded that if i needed the bars bringing up it was angled stem or riser time.
