Looking at getting some wheels built and was after some opinions.

Wheel build is as follows:

24/28 HED Belgium rims
DA 7900 hubs
CX RAYS
Brass silver nips

I'm not sure if to go for black or silver spokes?

Isn't silver a bit old school?

All Zipps have silver spokes and they are anything but "old school"!

Hmmm.... I had noticed that. I agree Zipps do look good.

    How about these:

  • i actually quite like the silver spokes, purely because of the sillver hub & alu braking surface.
  • I think I'm leaning toasted the silver spokes.

    Silver nips or black nips?

  • Thanks for allthe replies. Due to work commitments this build hasn't got off the ground yet, however now I'm thinking about changing the hubs to Tune Mig 70 and Mag 180 as this will bring the total weight down from about 1590 with the DA hubs to about 1435.

The DA hubs are regarded as bomb proof smooth rolling hubs, whereas the Tunes are German engineered, but seem to have a reputation for creaking and excessive drag.

Experiences from people who have used both hubs would be greatly appreciated.
  • Tune have solved the creaking issue and any drag will disappear after they have run in. For that kind of money you can also consider the 198g / 70g Carbon TI. The biggest saving though is a rim swap - the HED Belgium rims are 50g heavier each than the Velocity A23 rim and the latter is much easier to source in the UK than the HED. So you could save 100g easily by swapping to the Velocity A23. Depending on your weight you could also specifiy a mix of alloy and brass nipples too.

    Hope that helps - Jonathan

  • Thanks, but I'm set on HED. I've looked at the Carbon Ti, but can't find their hubs any where. I suspect if I could, I'd probably have to sell a kidney, where as I can get the DA or Tunes for approx £300.

I'm leaning toasted the DA hubs and sacrificing about 150grams just because of their bomb proof reputation, however I don't want to discount the Tunes as I'm sure they are engineered very well, as like most German engineering they are probably excellent.

I am considering the A23's for a trainging wheelset laced to some 105 hubs, however the HED's are my priority at the moment.
