Spoke width

I'm just trying to replace a few broken spokes on my Dutch bike. I ordered some and, comparing them to the other spokes, the length is fine (287mm) but the new ones are slightly thinner. The new spokes are 2mm wide and the old ones look like about 2.3 or 2.5. So, wondering if I could get away with using these or if I should try and track down some wider ones. Any ideas on where to get the bigger ones would be cool, as I can't see any in that size/width combination in any of my usual online shops. :?

Sapim Strong come in 2.3mm at the hub end. The rim end is 2mm. I think they're about as tough a spoke you can get - Spa Cycles do 'em for 50p each.

I personally replace with same width spokes only because I have a tensionmeter and like to balance tension in each spoke. Different width spokes need to have different tension which makes this tricky.
  • Yeah, my Batavus had gauge 13 spokes, best of luck with that unless you're travelling to the Netherlands soon. :?
