I think my bottom bracket is on the way out (after ~7000 miles). Groupset is SRAM Rival (integral chainset and BB spindle, external bearings).

Other than buying a direct SRAM replacement, how can I tell what BBs are compatible? Last time I replaced a bottom bracket was quite some time ago, and it was the cup/cone type with loose balls...
Pannier, 120rpm.

Sram uses the GXP standard BB,you can use compatable BB's from 3rd parties.Or you could just buy a new Truvativ/Sram GXP BB.I have used the Superstar Components GXP replacement BB's and it wasn't bad at all.

Or you could buy a new Hope external BB, and use a Hope GXP converter from chainreaction cycles.

I have also popped the seals of the external BB's and re-greased and have got a few more months out of them.
