Gary Fisher Marlin Headset help

I bought this 2003ish bike on an auction site and almost walked away as it was filthy and corroded. However it had the value in new tyres and seat so went ahead anyway as it would be a bit of a challenge and something to practice on.
I have it stripped right down and it is coming out OK but I am stuck on the headset. Had to use a heatgun and penetrating oil to remove the spacers and flat top plate. A split plastic wedge came out and it looks like it has a cartridge. At this point with the steerer loose at the top I expected the fork to just drop out but not that easy. I have hit it with a mallet but its stuck firmly to what I assume is the bottom bearing.
The writing on the headset has partly worn off but I can make out the words 'for Cane Creek' and the aheadset copyright. I have no idea what the lower bearing would look like and how it could be stuck so am not sure what I should do next.
If I keep hitting it I guess I might drive the entire lower bearing out of the frame? The bike isn't worth spending much money on so any cheap ideas appreciated! Also, are the cartridges replaceble or will I need to replace the entire bearing anyway?

more force.
have a look on Parktools for how it goes together/comes apart.
it sounds just like just as you have the wedge out."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks for the advice, I have been gentle so far. I found this drawing http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... iew-en.png
I guess the crown race is stuck in the cartridge. I'll try a bit of heat up the steerer tube and more oil and see how it goes. The bearings were OK but I need to get the forks off as they need servicing.0 -
I got it apart...And the lower bearing is missing! It was stuck because the retaining seal for the semi-sealed bearing fitted neatly into a slot for an outer seal on the crown race.
There is no significant wear so I presume it hasn't been ridden much like this. Despite the state of the bike, the drivetrain and other bearings have all turned out to be pretty good.
Can someone help with a source for a new semi-sealed bearing? I presume semi-sealed means the balls are exposed on the outer and run on the headtube race? Alternatively, if I can clean the crown race would it run on a caged bearing? Last option is a replacement headset but the cost of labour would end up being more than the bike is worth!0
