Is anyone using one with sucess?
Brought one of these to replace the Gusset batchelour i am currnetly using on by Boardman HT. It was not supplied with any fitting guidance.
As i understood it the chain should be as short as possible to allow as much wrap around the rear cog as possible.
Problem is even with brand new chain, 16t cog and 32t ring it does not tension the chain properly and the chain slips on the cog under any increased pressure.
Contacted Superstar and their reply was: "Hello with a sprung tensioner you need more chain length in than in the picture because you have just bottomed out the spring in that position. It needs to be at a more mech like angle. If you want to run a nearly straight run chain then the roller type ones"
But with a rear mech the top jocky wheel is close to and forward of the cassette to give proper wrap around. To run this at rear mech angle would only give 1/4 wrap around.

  • Worn out 16t cog? New cassettes and chains at the same time would be able to handle all sorts of angles slightly outside the specified tolerences? Just a thought.

  • Hi Chunkers
As i said although this photo shows a used chain. A brand new Sram 8sp chain and brand new Gusset double six 16t cog between DMR multiple spacer rings where fitted before first ride. The chain ring is also only a couple of weeks old so no problems there. The chainline was also setup correctly.
  • Out of the 16t only about half are in contact - increase that number and you'll get more grip?

Are you sure the manuf recommend that chain with the free wheel/cog?

I don't really understand what SS are saying - I'd take a link out, see what happens, if the same and you're able, another.

I'm having the exact same problem! I put a new chain and chainrings on and it's slipping exceptionally badly.

    Have you found a solution?
  • The only solution i found was to use my Gusset batchelour instead. I have not tried what they suggested after i emailed this photo, about using it at a rear mech angle. That would mean a longer chain and more slop.

Shorten the chain and run it closer to the chainstay?j

  • i ran one of these and had the slipping problem with heavy duty chain, then had the chain too tight and knackered the spring, i opened the housing up and there is another hole if you move the spring end into that it works better, but it worked really well with 8/9 speed chain, then found that dirt affects it, catching it on obstacles does as well, bought another type with an external sprung wire/rod, which worked ok in both up and down positions, but again mud etc affects it, so binned the tensioners and bought a slotted frame problem solved
