I have a Kona Lava Dome 2006, which badly needs a new Front Mech due to years of abuse interrupted with only occasional TLC.

Looking at the Front Mechs on Chain Reaction I noticed that I need to be careful when ordering as there are different sizes quoted ("28.6mm" and "34.9mm" are quoted).

I take it these sizes are referring to the circumference of the frame tube to which the front mech will be attached? I equally take it that an old school steel hardtail with skinny cromoly tubes will be likely to be compatible with the 28.6mm mech?

Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance.

  • Yep. You need to measure the tube and check.

One size mech does fit various sizes using the spacer included - but there may be two varients - tech docs are your friend.

The 34.9mm bracket will come with shims to make it fit the smaller 28.6mm seat tube if needed so if in doubt buy the bigger one.

you also need to check if its a top or bottom swing? Basically is the band above on below the mech

As has been said the aftemarket ones come with (slightly unsightly) shims to fit the smaller tubes, why not get a good used one instead and save money and get one that looks right? I have an Alivio off a 2004 chucker (28.6mm steel frame) in excellent condition but its probably worth less than a fiver!
