In the north end of Queensland, Australia we are now facing a category 5 cyclone : http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ65002.shtml We can expect :

CATEGORY 5 (severe tropical cyclone)
Extremely dangerous with widespread destruction.
A Category 5 cyclone's strongest winds are VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds with typical gusts over open flat land of more than 280 km/h.
These winds correspond to the highest category on the Beaufort scale, Beaufort 12 (Hurricane).

See ya later!

And to think some people complain about a 20mph headwind...
  • 'kin 'ell!!!

We're in the middle of a "severe gale 9" here now, and it's like armageddon outside (my office looks out over the bay). That's only gusts up-to about 60-70mph. 280km/h = 174mph (had to google it)

Imagine how fast you could go with it as a tail wind though!!!! 8)

Still rode in this morning though 'cos I'm ard!

  • I'll give you 50p if you go outside and get some pics when it's in full-flow!

In fact, someone needs to set a new "photo-challenge" - You riding your bike in a Cat 5 cyclone

In all seriousness though, hope it all passes without too much damage.

possibly all communications are down so he has no internet?

i hope that's the case anyway
  • He probably got picked up by the wind, Wizard of Oz Style (while out riding his bike to get some pictures for that 50p), and is now in Kansas.
  • Thanks for your concern, still alive and kicking. I did your challenge of me on a bike for 50p, but the wind blew away my camera. Do I still get my 50p?!

We lost power at 4 pm tuesday (local time) and only just got it back. 120 hours. Fortunately we have a generator to keep the fridge and freezer going.

I'm going to get some pics together for those who are interested.

Going for a lie down as I have a migraine from spending the last 2 days cutting trees apart with a chainsaw in 30 something degree temperatures with virtually no breeze. (Don't ever offer to cut up a plam tree. PITA!)

  • Glad to hear your alright dude!

Crazy wind speeds you've got there, and I know the feeling of cutting trees in shit weather. I lived in NC for most of my life, and we got hurricanes every year. Would destroy houses as well, and trying to clean up the aftermath was quite tedious to say the least.

It's ok, your camera was blown half way round the world and came through my window 2 nights ago. I'll send it back, along with 50p.

Glad you're ok, hopefully you didn;t receive too much damage to persons or property.

You should build some noth-shore out of the Palm Tree. Making it from bandy palm-tree would add another level of difficulty and awesomeness to it.

    glad you're ok dude :D
  • id be really interested to see the pictures when they materialise, but i can rather imagine you have other things on your mind, second/third that hope managed to avoid too much damage to person and property.
  • He's just a snippet of went on during Tropical Cyclone Yasi. You'll see a small amount of the damage caused. There's not a chainsaw or generator available to buy in town!

In this album you can see a little of what I dealt with. For the next few days I was either too busy or tired to take photos. The Palm tree wasn't photographed but would have been over 20ft tall.

My chainsaw is over at a mate's place or I would be out cleaning up the local trail network. I hope they fared well.

Bad news: 71,417 homes without power (ours was out for 5 days but we had a generator for the fridge and freezer) some of which still don't have power back yet.

Good news: No fatalities directly related to the cyclone. Only 1 death caused by someone running a diesel generator in his living room (where he was holed up!)

I'm in the army and the first guys to go up took 2 days to get to a town less than 150miles away because they had to cut their way in!

The clean up effort will take months, and there may be another cyclone forming soon!

I will try to get more photos for you soon. Any questions from you lot?!
