Thinking ahead here, in 2012 i want to do 2 major tours for charity. The first around europe in august of around 3 weeks. For this i have a very general route, londo-paris-pyrenees-barcelona-mt. ventoux-alps-mt zoncolan-rome, but any genreal information/warnings/help on routes, accomodation, kit, cost etc. would be welcome. The second is to follow route 101 in the US of around 2 weeks. This route explains itself, but any detours or similar info to the europe one would be nice. Any training advice would be appreciated, note; i do regular 50mile rides around once a week and have done some small weekend tours but nothing longer than 3-4days. Thanks

That sounds like an awfully long distance for three weeks. Might be worth spending some time working out what distances you will be covering.
  • have looked at it, maybe optomistic, but it does check out (just). could extend to a month, but thats why im here, any shortcuts or quick routes would help
  • i did a trip through europe last summer, 2600 miles in 31 days, i did 100 miles a day and that pushed me. i did it solo and was camping all the way around. i did lots in the south of france and along the riviera into italy all the way down to rome then back up to the alps. if you go to this link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=1 ... 561&v=wall
you can see the route i did. if any part of your route overlapps and you have questions do let me know.
i did it for charity, i raised 3 grand and i spent about 2000 on the actual trip, including ferry out and train to the start point. including all kit and food etc along the way. luckily i got lent a bike so i didnt need to worry about that.

I am curious - you say you raised £3000 and spent £2000 on the trip.

By that do you mean that you deducted the £2000 for your expenses from the £3000 you raised, thereby donating the remaining £1000 to charity?

Or are you saying - as in two separate thoughts - that you raised £3000 and spent £2000 of your own money on the trip; thereby donating the entire £3000 to charity and being out of pocket (or having paid your own way in other words) the £2000 your trip cost?

There is quite a big difference there.

I'd love to know which one it is.
  • i raised 3 grand for charity. if people give me money for the royal british legion i'm not going to spend it on bike equipment, the 2 grand was all my own hard earned cash

With the 3 weeks you could comfortably get from London to Rome.
  • wow 2600milespoppyappeal, £3000 is a lot of money. I've been thinking of doing one of the rides for charity, any tips?

    That's a great effort 2600milespoppyappeal......

I cycled from Seattle down as far as Coos Bay (then went inland & returned to Seattle) in 2008 - which is the Washington/Oregon part of Route 101. It's the easiest way to cycle, as the prevailing wind is normally from the North West.

Took the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island to start & then took the following route....

    74 miles to Port Angeles
    95 miles to Kalaloch
    76 miles to Aberdeen
    80 miles to Astoria
    77 miles to Netarts
    82 miles to Newport
    50 miles to Florence
    50 miles to Coos Bay

We carried out stuff with us, but stayed in motels/lodges every night - let me know if you want their names/web addresses.

I haven't cycled the Calfornia part of 101, but have driven it a couple of times - it's awesome! Good luck with both your planned trips!
