My Big and middle chainrings are due for repair on my Race Face Evolve X Type Chain set ( http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... et_346.htm ),

I asked the LBS chap today how much for these two replacements and was told £15 for the Middle but £45 for the big and thats shimano deore, had a quick look at merlin and found shimano SLX for £8.99 each ! ( http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... gs_1FK.htm)

Am I missing something here ? Will these fit and are they a suitable replacement ?

Very Confused !

Thanks in advance, Rob

  • are you sure he didn't say deore xt?
  • yup, i left the shop with tears in my eyes, having just replaced a bottom bracket, headset and rear deraliuer !

As well as telling me my chainrings were nearly finisished, he also mentiond that a mojo front and rear shock service might be worth while in the next six months.

Anyone know if the chainrings are suitable ?

You may have a problem fitting the SLX middle ring as it's a composite/alloy mix and a little wider than a Deore. Apart from that it's usually fine. If your chainrings are gone, I'd also take a look at your chain and cassette.

And I'd take the advice on the fork and shock service too, you don't want to leave it so long that the anodizing wear off the shock body and the fork legs. The price to get that fixed will leave more than a tear in your eye :P
  • Am I missing something here ?

Yes. The granny is £8.99, middle £27.95 and big £31.95. The price updates when you select the size.
  • Thought it was too good to be true ! Works out the same price as the bike shop quoted ! Confindence restored.

Anyone know of a cheaper but decent alternative that will fit ?

Agreed cassette and chain wil prob need changing at the same time :x but MOJO will have to wait until my birthday I think !

I was just about to add that, often cheaper to buy the whole thing than just rings

Superstar used to do rings, but stopped, they might still have a few sets going for cheap.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?
