Epic fail of note.

Just got into Basingstoke to my mate's place, as I enter his road, he calls me and tells me he has to drop his car of at Autoglass for a new windscreen, so I offer to follow him down and bring him back as I am right at his doorstep.

On the way to drop his Honda Accord off we approach a roundabout, a Jag comes flying through from the right, my mate brakes hard, I brake, lock up all 4 wheels and slam into the back of his Honda. Oh it was raining.. so roads were damp and I was a little close, expecting him to enter the roundabout, not stop
My Land Rover has some marks on the bumper. His Honda has a mashed rear bumper and boot lid. We open the boot to check the damage and, ta-daa! It lo longer closes.
His Accord has an MOT booked for Friday too. Man I feel so damned guilty, but he's quite okay about the whole affair.

I've offered him the use of my Land Rover whilst his Accord is in for repairs. Oops.. and pay his excess

  • Shouldn't that be on your insurance then - why make him lose his no claims? He could get a hire car on your insurance?

Should be OK for the MOT then
  • The MOT place which is next to Autoglass inspected the poor Accord and said it shouldn't have an issue with MOT
We did bend the boot lid a little so now the boot closes, result...
Tomorrow we'll sort the insurance out and all I can say is thank goodness for the No Claims Protection I took at £7/month

IIRC it should be fine providing there are no sharp edges on the damaged bodywork. I once had to take a car in for a MOT that had been rear-ended by a lorry and they said any dangerously sharp edges could be taped up and issued with an advisory notice.

Your insurance company should be able to deal with all of this. This should sort concerns about excess.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

  • I've been to basingstoke.
  • Just to add a bonus to the day... I blew a head gasket on the way home! I think it was a faulty water pump!
