got my new bike on the way this week and hope to get out on it over the weekend. Thing is I only have fair weather summer padded shorts etc.

Anyone got any reccomendations for winter warmers? (on a budget too)

Bib tights with shorts or 3/4 lengths over the top? Thermal t-shirt with a jersey?

Wiggle are doing their DHB roubaix bibtights for £40 IIRC. Mine are 2 years old and still good as new. Very warm.

Roubaix tights + decent base layer + lightweight shell jacket = warm (for me anyway)

And obviously some decent gloves, warm socks (but not if that means your shoes are then too tight) and some overshoes to keep the wind / water out.
  • Hmmmm...I think I'll have a size problem with the Roubaix tights, well, any bib tights

I have a 49" chest and 34" waist...so I'll either be super tight on the chest with a fitted waist or fitted chest with super baggy waist and legs...

    Been very pleased with Rogelli:

Have a Soft Shell jacket and have just ordered a pair of bib tights, merino wool socks and bandana (toes, head and legs got cold last weekend!)

It's cheapish... but not HK cheap (but better quality IMO)

They don't really go round your chest, so go for the size to fit your waist / legs. The shoulder straps are pretty stretchy.

What you need to avoid is the Nora Batty effect round your knees.
  • Cool, cheers

so, bib tights, shorts on top (not too keen on going full lycra straight away), howies merino base layer and light jacket

  • I go for a long sleeve jersey over my baselayer and then a really small waterproof which I can put in my jersey pocket if I get hot. It packs away to the size of a fist:

    bit expensive, but worth it.
  • I have a howies waterproof smock thing that's really lightweight and rolls up small, that'll do for now!

FFS don't wear shorts on top, you'll like like a tool!

Be carefull of waterproofs, if they aren't very breathable, you'll sweat like a bugger
  • Haha! Why?

3/4 length shorts over bib tights, what's wrong with that?

It just looks wrong (IMO), just wear the lycra and be proud! (and if you can't be proud, stick a couple of socks down the front of your tights....)
  • Haha! I'll see how I look with just the tights on and hope I don't cause accidents

  • I'm just about to push the button on these

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-pace-padded-bib-tight/

But the sizing is still worrying me - do I go for the large (waist measurement is about right but height and chest is wrong)

or the XL (height and chest are about right but waist is wrong)

    These arrived yesterday:

Not suggesting that you get the above.. just that my reply is based on the material.

I went for the smaller size that fitted my waist - they are pretty stretchy - so fit nicely. I personally think that you want to avoid (at all costs) them being too big.

I gather like I did you ment cycling (licra) shorts over your tights, thats all! :)

I'm only 5'6" but went for medium in the DHBs. They are so stretchy I reckon you'd still get a six footer in them.

When I later ordered the Finchdean bibshorts I went for small and they are fine.

You giants can read into that what you will.

    Amen to that!

If you want cheap cheap leggings, I have been using Karrimor (sports Direct) cycling legging since I started in October. Used three days a week and still going strong. However due to weight loss, they are starting to get a bit baggy and the medium is too small for me
