Ok i want to use my bike a bit more (see newbie thread) but i dont have a garage and own a small (very small) 2 bed house. the bike is currently living in the kitchen and the missus has bedgrudginly (spelling) been ok with this since it has been cleen. im going home tonight and its going to be mucky and i know shes going to flip!

soo i need to think of a way of storing it so
1. it doesnt mark the floor.
2. it doesnt fall over scratching the radiator its lent against (last night that one)
3. it doesnt get in the way.

i dont want it out side. so any ideas?

i have a cellar that i could clear out but its very hard getting it down the stairs (scratched bike) as you have to get it through a door and turn 90 deg on the back wheel then basically throw it down the stairs as theres no room to carry it.

hmm

Got a spare wall? over the fireplace?
  • If you have a hallway, a bike hoist might be the answer

And you could always fit mudguards to cut down on the crud on your bike (though the purist racer boys would disagree).

I asked a similar question a little while back. most people used various kinds of wall or ceiling hooks to get the bike up of the floor and out the way.

Hang it on the wall in the kitchen? You might still have to take steps to avoid it dripping on the floor when it is wet. I currently keep 3 bikes on a floor to ceiling bike rack in the kitchen by the back door (but then I live on my own ;) ). In my previous rented flat I kept my bike in the living room using a plastic mat to protect the wooden floor from dirt. Had to clean a few marks off the wall when I moved out but I never had any problems when they inspected the flat and I got my full deposit back when I moved out.

Long term for domestic harmony you are probably going to need some sort of secure outdoor storage but for now just ensure that surfaces that your bike are going to come into contact with are covered or protected.

get rid of your sofa and put the bikes in it's place hooked up to turbos.

visitors will still be able to sit down when they come to visit with the added bonus that they can get fit as well.

A chap I used to ride with 10 years ago had hoists up above his bed. Anyone else would have thought they were for kinky activities, but the reality was his bikes got hoisted up above the bed.

Some carbon / titanium exotica might just about be OK (nothing wrong with bike porn  ), but sight of my crusty commuter in not likely to create the right err ambiance. Not to mention oily drips over the bed linen - personally I've never found the need for any additional lubrication in the bedroom

I have a small two up, two down. The bikes live under the stairs (staircase in middle of living dining room, wall removed). The road bike on a decathlon £6 BB stand (http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/sv-101-bike-rack-3957901) and the MTB commuter on a kickstand. Have varnished floor boards so not to much worry about mess, just a quick mop up now and then - helps living on my own though :)

I haven't seen this "in person" yet - but honestly not quite sure how it works; does it stand up on it's own and is it fiddly to get the bike in and out of - especially in a tight space?

I should add - my hybrid has been living outside for a year, always covered up and in a very secure place (nobody can spot it) one chain only lasted 2 months due to rust, my SPD pedals are rusty and stiff, my headset has got rusty and the bolt holding my handlebars on are rusty top to bottom.

Don't leave it outside! I'm having mine serviced next week and it's going to live inside from now on, even though it means carrying it up 4 flights of stairs!!

Outside shouldn't even be an option. Explain this to your wife.

If it gets left outside, no kind of lock will stop it from being stolen. It's be like your missus cropping the lock herself and then handing the bike to the thief.

Bicycle theft is a seedy underworld. Proceeds from the sale of your stolen bike will be used to fund drugs and prostitution.

Worse still - some of the money goes on lawyers that keep getting scumbbags off, after they've committed these crimes.

Tell her this and then ask her where you should pop the slightly dirty bike.
  • clearly she doesn't ride and appreciate the beauty of your steed....personally I don't mind having bikes scattered around the house - we had 6 at one point and ended up with a few in the bedroom. you need to educate your wife, maybe I'm just a weird woman :)

It uses the down tube and the bottom bracket to hold it.
I've sold a few to people who use them for transitions in triathlons, from this I can only gather they are simple and fast.

    +1.

Chuck out something you don't need like beds, chairs, tables etc.

Or get your wife to spend her resting hours D-locked to a bracket outside.

I've given up on storage solutions, I just climb over them when I have to

In my head I have ideas of a fancy contraption to store my mountain bike in the large stair space on the way upstairs (you know, that bit that's always impossibly high to decorate). I have no idea how it would work though, but it'd be great.

In a perfect A-Team world i'd push my bike halfway up the stairs onto a waiting platform, which would lift up and level out before disappearing into the loft for storage. I'd then be able to go into the loft to work on the bikes in a man-cave fashion. (Oh how I miss my previous cellar).

One day I will consider such a contraption. I think it'd be nice wall art having a bike hanging in that stair space.
Out with the old, in with the new here.

Um, why can't you just ride it down the cellar stairs?
