I am looking for a cheap set of wheels. Been Looking at Hope Pro 3 hubs with either 36 hole Mavic Open Pro rims or the more aero DT Swiss R520 32 hole rim or the Hope Hoops Pro3 RS-Mono . I stopped cycling due to injury from Oct last year to now and have gained 3 stone so am now 16 stone. I will only be using the wheels for fitness, training type runs and strength is paramount.

Thanks for any help

Open Pro will be fine. 36 spokes are ideal, as you have chosen. Are Hope hubs "cheap"? Shimano hubs are better in my judgment, and something like 105 are cheaper surely?

Not sure on hub prices on their own and a lower price not really needed tbh they seem low enough prices. But the Hope Hoops Pro3 RS- Mono I can get for about £245 for the wheelset. But they only have the 32 hole open pro rim. The custom made ones the same but 36 hole open pros are £269 for the pair, plus can choose hub colour etc. the the DT Swiss ones I mentioned are £279.

I did have set of open pro 36 hole rims on a 105 hub but the rear hub seemed to make a weird noise when pedaling like there was a bearing problem or something. I sent them back to the shop for a refund after only 2 weeks. They never got back to me with what was wrong with them. A few club mates also said not to buy 105 hubs, poor seals and bearings in comparison to others.

Unfortunately you can't see the prices online - he built up some touring wheels for a mate of mine and they seem bombproof.

+1 for Open pros, I run a 32hole set on my single speed.

I'd go DT RR465 for the rim and new 5700 105 hubs or even Ultegra if you can stretch the little extra.
DT 465 rims are excellent.I'm 14 stone ish and I've run these rims for ages with no issues. From customer experience DT rims tend to outlast Mavic in regards to the braking surface.Mavic are getting pretty thin these days
  • Still unsure of what to buy, so much choice and specs out there. Must say I do prefer the look of DT rims to the open pros but strength is most important and finding it hard to find reviews of DT rims and even if I do find reviews I don't know if the wheelbuilder was good or not etc etc

A couple above recommending Shimano hubs over the Hope Pro 3 though which I find surprising, I'm new to road biking but always heard negative things about them from fellow club riders, as in they are high maintenance compared to some others. Or is there maybe something wrong with hope hubs that I have missed maybe?
