Which new forks should I buy?, Budget maximum of £250

Hi, first post so not used to forums so bear with me. I have recently finshed upgrading a Decathlon Rockrider 5.2, I have upgraded everything other than the frame, stem and bars. Everything is fine other than me buying the wrong front derailleur  but it still works.
My main problem is my fork, I bought a set of Suntour XCM V3's and it was before I had done any research. They have only been on the bike and have practically seized. I took my bike back to the shop I bought the forks from and they had a look at them and took out the springs either side and greased and checked everything inside. They were working fine for about 5mins and they had seized again. I probably shouldn't of brought the Suntours now so I have a budget of anything upto £250. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Jake

Size travel?
Used for?
Air or coil?Trek 930 singletrack 06-08
Pinnacle Peak 2.0 08-10
Carrera Vengeance Ultimate 11-0 -
I use it mainly for xc riding, I am guessing that 100mm is the minimum length of travel I will go and for air or coil I have no idea, I am pretty much a complete beginner when it comes to this. All i want is to have a reliable fork with at least 100mm of travel.0

for that price you can get a very very nice fork. The Tora and Reba are both excellent.
Manitou drake is also a stunning piece of kit.
Both are in a different league.
I normally ride a Dorado, yet would be happy with any of those 3 (prefer the manitou of the 3).Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?0 -
I am interested in the Reba's and the Tora's what is the diffeence between the Coil and Air, I know what it is but which is better and what are the main differences in how it feels?
Also I am only 8.5stone so will this affect how they perform because I have read on other posts that some forks are too stiff for some people who are too light?.0 -

how much would a low end sektor cost? I was just on Chain Reaction and there cheapest is just over £300 are they cheaper else where?0
-
Coil U-turn Sektors are roughly £230 including shipping (give or take a tenner depending on what axle you want) from German webshops. Solo-air models come in at about £250. I think
http://www.bike-components.de was cheapest last time I checked.
Ribble had to some good deals a while ago too, but half their stuff is never in stock.
+1 on current Manitou forks being very good vfm too. I've had very good experiences in the last couple of years with R7s and Minutes.0 -
Thanks for that I might go for the sectors for that price just got to save money up and wait thanks everyone :P0

one more thing, solo air or coil on the rockshox sektor?0
-
Solo-air would be easier to set for your weight, but then you loose the external travel-adjust.0

I like these forks because of the amountof travel and they are cheaper than the solo air ones but I dont know what U-Turn is can you explain what it is?0 -
You'd probably be better with the air one at your weight-the main difference between the two is that to make the air one softer you just let some air out, but to make the coil one softer you need to buy new springs . Considering how light you are, you would almost certainly need to change the springs in the coil ones to get the most out of them. Air ones are lighter too. However, coil ones are smoother once you've got the right springs in them.0

how much are a set of new springs?0
-
U-turn allows you to adjust the amount of travel through a dial on the top of the fork.
Make sure you get the QR9 model, not the QR15 or the QR20 as they will probably not fit your hubs0 -
thanks for that, you also read my mind, that was the next question, as you can tell im pretty much a complete beginner, how would I set the solo air fork up for my weight?0
-
You use a shock pump (£10-20) to either pump air in or press the button on it to let air out.
Softer Springs for a rockshox sector are £50

ahh ok thanks0

I'm not certain a 140/150mm fork would 'fit' your bike. It originally came with 70mm according to Decathlon's website. Going to 140mm would be a huge difference, and despite improved fork performance, it would probably be for the worse in terms of handling. I'd guess at a push the bike would ride ok with 120mm but no more than that.0
-
you're going to snap the headtube off with the Sektors, it should only really be a 100mmm fork, not 150mm. Rebas are the way forward, they only come in air 'flavour'. If you can get some for your budget then get some.0
-
You certainly don't need a sektor. Also, do you need v brake mounts? If not, the reba is ideal.0

But on the air vs coil, go for air. I'm nearly 8 stone and would be stuffed without an air fork. That was a primary consern when I chose my bike. If I didn't then I'd barely get 50% of the travel0 -
I wouldlove to have some of these "air flavoured" rebas but they are very expensive and it wouldnt be a very wise move for me to be spending that much money on just forks. So what I am planing on doing is going for some RockShox Tora Solo Air's, this should be ok, and does anyone know if they come with the gold tubes?
Also I have discs so no need for v brake mounts0 -
how much are reba's just wondering?0

I have been thinking since first posting this and as I am only 16 £270 on forks is quite expensive. Would I notice much of a difference between these and say the Tora's being quite inexperienced with decent forks?0
-
The differences:
Rebas are 400-1000g lighter than toras(depending on model of each)
Rebas have either motion control or blackbox motion control, meaning that they will not pogo on long decents
Rebas are dual air rather than solo air-the positive and negative air chambers are filled separately, meaning that the fork is more adjustable to your weight0 -
hmm, decisions decisions, ill wait now and just think about it and when i get enough money decide on which ones ill go for, so thanks everyone who posted0
