Hi I've just got a planet x sl pro, all looks well but it wont shift to the largest rear cog. if I click the gear up it immediately skips back down.

the tension adjustment cog (where the cable fits into the rear derailler turns but doesn't seem to bite, it just turns).

I've adjusted the reach on the brakes but this has brought the callipers closer to the rims, what's the optimal clearance between the pads & rim?

it could be that the 'L' limit screw shown on your pic is too far in, thereby not allowing full movement into the lowest gear, i'd try that as a starter, be careful that you do not undo too far, as this may allow the chain to go over the top and into the spokes, i'd do about a 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn to start with. (The cable adjusters do feel like you mention, that's not unusual).

and your question on pads/rim distance, it's totally personal, it's whatever feels best to you
  • Had the same problem with my rival setup a couple of weeks ago - the barrel adjuster is on a slider so it just rotates unless you engage it (push it down towards the sprockets) I tried adjusting the low limit, but the problem was solved by a couple of turns anti-clockwise on the barrel adjuster

I've 35 years riding experience and the highest I've got in the pecking order is Shimano 105

Well they almost tempted me back in the summer with the full Athena 11, I just couldn't get the money ready before they sold out  Not too bothered by the Red because it's a mix'n'match set up.

At least with a 7 speed you should be able to buy chains and cassettes at a reasonable price

You need to adjust the cable barrel adjuster. If you need to adjust the high and low screws make sure you choose the right one as otherwise your chain and deraillieur could end up in the spokes destroying the deraillieur meaning you may have a long walk home if of course you haven't fallen off as the chain gets jammed between the cassette and spokes as you toil up hill.

I woud suggest doing a basic bike maintenance course otherwise you may at best shorten the life of your bike or it's components or more likely do some damage to your bike or yourself when then riding it. Or alternatively if you are a real tight wad borrow a book on bike maintenance from your local library.

ATGNI springs to mind  .

    Enjoy your bike.
