3 stage 2.1 race, first in the UCI Europe Tour. The start list isn't packed with top flight talent - Cunego the biggest name - but has some handy riders. Being a smaller Italian race they are all small Italian teams.

Stage 1 yesterday had a 2man breakaway - 130km off the front and caught in the last 5km. A tough uphill finish was won by Pietropolli (Lasmpre-ISD). Oss tried to jump clear in the final but got hauled in, Cunego lauched an attack, but a little early and with not full power.

  • I watched Rai's coverage last night.
They started in glorious, Spring-like conditions, before the leadened January sky filled in.
The final 14km were tough, despite a 2.8% average. The higher they went, the harder it got.
Liquigas train first, followed by Farnese.
After that, it's on the clip. Damiano Cunego's little attack and subsequent work did most of the damage. Followed by Ulissi and finally Gavazzi's lead out of Pietropoli.
Sound team work from the men in pink.
Schumacher looks to be finding his old legs at Miche, too.

  • No sign of that steep climb towards the end, on Rai's rather dull coverage.
Did see the most famous "nodding dog" in the peloton.
Paxti Vila one of the two man break.

There has been some cracking racing though. Not too sure I would be happy with the state of the roads.

Interesting to see Stefan Schumacher near the top in stage 1

e2a: I searched high and low for some coverage of Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise - I am interested to see Ricco riding.. 8)

Actually, it was not a mass sprint, but a breakaway with 250 metres to go!
Belletti went, just as the Farnese lead out man sat up, cos Oscar Gatto wasn't on his wheel. He boxed in Schumacher, Sacha Modolo didn't have to bother and suddenly there was a 30 metre gap.
The Colnago man had nothing left to do, but sit up and celebrate his win, from 100 m out.
