Am in the process of an upgrade to my spesh allez and am a little confused as to which brake/gear shifters i can fit.
At the moment i have SHIMANO 2300 24 speed STI. flight deck compatable.
Which levers can I fit......i've seen 9 speed,10 speed and even 8 speed and am conscious of the cost involved so dont want to get it wrong.
Many thanks in advance. :?

The speed refers to how many sprockets you run on your rear cassette. In non-tech speak, how many gears you have on the rear wheel. If there are 9, you'll want 9 speed. If you have 10, 10 speed.
You have a 24 speed, so I assume you have a triple ring on the front, and 8 on the back (3x8 = 24)? If that's right (go and count to be sure!), you'll want 8 speed which allows triple shifting at the front. I think I'm right in saying an upgrade on your 2300 is the Shimano R500; http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=136380 -

but at 190 quid then you might aswell go to 10speed, as it's just going to keep getting more expensive to maintain 8speed!Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0 -
I echo jibberjims comments, £190 just for STI's when you can get a whole 105 groupset for £360 is insane.

+1. I have an 8 speed mtb with XT and a tourer with Sora. Fewer folk are selling 8 speed cassettes new, the last 11-28 I bought came from Italy as UK sellers were wanting a premium for good ones. I'd also like to change the tourer to 11-26 but can't find one anywhere. Eventually I'll go to ten speed.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

Not sure if an 8 speed front ring will accept a 10speed chain or not. But if it does you could actually change to 10 speed cheaper than the 180 quid as you don't need new derailleurs. So from rose versand at the moment - it's 110 for R700 levers, 35 for a 105 cassette, 10 for an Ultegra 6700 chain. Even if you need to throw in 3 new front rings you're going to be cheaper than the STI's alone for the OP!Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0 -
10 for an Ultegra 6700 chain
Avoid, folk have been reporting lots of probs with those snapping. That's why they're so cheap.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

Or then again take advantage of the cheapness because all of them have been tarred by a bad bunch.Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0
