Any advice on tightening carbon components without a torque wrench?

  • Tighten till it cracks, then back off half a turn.

it can be estimated with the rule (100/ratchet handle length) x (nm/10) to give you the force you should be pulling on the handle in kgs (bag of sugar). ratchet handle length is in cm by the way. to account for the human error, use assembly compound where necessary and aim to tighten a portion under the spec. depending how far you want to go you could even hang the calculated weight on a hook from the ratchet handle whilst horizontal.

you improvise, you adapt, you overcome.
  • or you buy a torque wrench :P
