Dumb clothing question

In the freezing weather, I was wearing a merino top over a standard(wickable) long sleeved cycling top. (Fleece on top of that, and then the most expensive jacket I have ever bought).
Dumb question is this-is it best to wear the merino next to the skin, or the standard cycling top?

I'd wear merino next to skin - if for no other reason than it doesn't get smelly.

Sounds like you were incredibly well wrapped-up!

well, there was also the two pairs of socks, two pairs of gloves, skull cap, pashmina..........and I have a generous layer of blubber around my core.

December-early January was the most consistently cold weather I have ever cycled during though.
