DIY Decal printing - what kit?

I work from home and need a new printer so am thinking of getting one that can also be used to print replacement vinyl decals.
Has anyone done this themselves, and if so any advice on type of printer, vinyl paper supplier etc.
I assume it would have to be a laser printer as I can't imagine inkjet printing being robust enough.
Would there have to be a top clear sheet to protect it?

I used to be a designer and I now work as a design teacher. I've produced vinyl decals on a number of occasions for various applications. You will need a vinyl cutter rather than a printer, you can pick these up in different size formats ranging from a couple of hundred pounds to thousands! Most recently I've been using one of the Roland STX vinyl cutters, these are desktop size and will produce a maximum output of around 200mm wide (the length is dictated by how much vinyl you have) you can get very good results with these but they will all require CAD software to drive them.Specialized Roubaix
