Whats the difference between the various different Shimano BB's? Is the difference between a Tiagra and Dura Ace simply weight or do the bearings get better and hence last longer as you go up the range? And which would you say has the best durability and which is the best value for money? Cheers.

i would say probably better bearings. but lower end will be better value. they dont go that often.
  • So how often would you expect a BB to go - I'm having to replace a SRAM BB on a bike about 18 months old?

Yup, higher-range units user better quality bearings - often with improved sealing too.

Life of external BBs is a lot less than older cartridge types and 1-2 years isn't usual - less if you ride lots in the rain without mudguards. I had some barely last a winter.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

my sora bb has gone through two winters ok didnt even face the bb and it was a square crank before hand, no mudguards. it does depend on how wet or dirty it gets. but its not really a disaster if it lasts 18 month. a better alternative to an expensive bb is to refit it with some high quality engineering bearings. you are only limited by what you can find. shimano are a standard production size as well. 37x25x7 mm. or 6805.
    heres one example

  • Well the BB is being replaced by the LBS this week but I'll bear that in mind for next time - worked out the last one had done about 3000 miles so not tooooo bad I suppose

    thanks
