getting in to rollers

i have recently bouht some rollers as i want to do some longer sessions than my 10 mile commute to work and 10 mile back....i'd love to do longer rides at the weekend and when the summer comes but don't know if i have the fitness yet and being a larger rider (around 200lbs and 6"1') could do with losing some weight from around the middle as i'm sure this will make the riding easier

i have had my bike fitted to me (specialized secteur elite) and am comfortable but if i push too hard on my commutes then my knees play up so i want to increase my fitness and strength whilst on the rollers, if that makes sense?

does anyone have suggestions as to a good training plan to get in to rollers? as in times, intervals etc.?

  • I've had my rollers for two weeks now.

    I'm six foot and 247lbs.

I've been doing sufferfest videos and step intervals (30 seconds at threshold, 30 easy, 60 seconds at threshold 30 easy up to 3 minutes threshold and back down again).
It's working out about an hour each for these with the warm ups.

I put some easy rides in between so I'm not knackered for my 60 mile weekends rides and obviously a rest day or two depending on how I feel.

  • thanks for the info, am not sure about watching tv though as have tried the rollers a couple of times but it takes everything i've got not to fall off and keep moving...

It gets easier with practice. First few rides are like ice skating on stilts. Not to the drinking while riding stage but i could watch TV no problem.

Yeah not a problem for me - not a telly though but a wall and a projector and a PA system.

The first few times were wobble ridden but I actually find that watching the wall stops the wobbles.
