Wrong sort of cassette

I just bought a second hand road bike. It is a triple that originally had 24 gears. When I bought it the person who sold it me said he had his local bike shop put a new cassette on the back to give him an extra low gear for going up hills.

I took the bike for a service and they informed me that the 9 speed cassette is a mountain bike cassette and not a road cassette.

Does it matter?

nope, as long as the mech can manage it.

calling it an MTB cassette is not really correct.

it is a wide ratio cassette as normally found on MTBs rather than a close ratio cassette as normally found on a road bike.

both can be found on either types of bike.

But if it originally had 24 gears - it only has 8 speed components everywhere else???

That is what I thought but if it has it doesn't show. Given earlier answers, I assume he requested a wide ratio cassette and it was done correctly, including a change to the other relevant bits (just the shifters?). It has no trouble finding its way into any of the 9 speeds and my local shop didn't bring it to my attention.

Most of the 8 speed bits will work with 9 speed bits and if it has friction shifters then there is no indexing to go wrong!!!

They are not friction shifters (I do not think). STI on the brake lever and they click when you change gear.

Is it not 7 clicks? For 8 gears.

    And don't call me Shirley.

sorry totally missed the reference to the 8sp shifters.

yes you should have an 8 speed cassette as the cassette total width is the same for 8 and 9spd cassettes so the spacing between the cogs is not the same. so you will have only a few cog that will run smoothly and one that will be jumped over as you go up and down the cassette.

  • I can't even count. It is an 8 speed cassette. The STI gears have 7 clicks, naturally.

so the only issue is that is it a wide ratio cassette rather than a close ratio cassette?

    not a problem.

    OT, but:
You might notice that I've referenced a double post above - but the original has gone (the one with the pic of the cassette if you've been following) as has the one after with the pic of the tape reel.
    What did we do wrong?
