As part of our promotion of the Wheel Heroes 100's rides in May we asked former British Cycling coach, Paul Bailey to put a plan together for riders looking at going long for the first time.

Seemed to good to keep to ourselves, so here's the link

and yes of course we'd love you to enter the ride too!

    Thanks for sharing.

I'm signed up to the Etape Caledonia in May and really need to get some training for it. Hopefully this will help guide me in the right direction.

One thing that's always kinda confused me. When plans say to start incorporating hills does that mean you have to find somewhere flat to train before then. I live in a hilly area so don't have a choice but to incorporate them in rides

To use the plan above as an example, it says Jan/Feb don't try too hard but please do get in lots of miles. Then in March it says "start adding in some harder sessions" including perhaps hills

If you live in a hilly area then in the "base" phase ( Jan/Feb ) you can take it easy going up the hills. Use the tiniest gear. Use the easier route. For the "harder sessions" be a bit more brisk and aggressive.
