Seven Mile Syndrome

I'm not exactly worried, just curious whether anyone else gets the same; around 20 to 30 minutes into a ride, I get an ache/pain in the sit bones, and occasionally other leg joints too

It's the same sort of dull ache I used to get when first riding my hardtail MTB around a year ago, it always settles down and I can go on to do a decent distance (80 today :D ) without any further occurrence - do you think it's just the old bones settling in? Just seems odd to get it then, not a the outset or later in a ride :?

    Snap!
this is even worse when I ride to work as it's only 7.5 mile, but think in my case Rick Chasey is right, I never warm up properly ( and at 40 I ought to be) , rush out the door as Mrs comes back from horse ( six yr old son, ) which reflected in my agonising cramp 20 mile into the ride this week-end and resulting debilitating tight calf muscle all day Monday.
But yes after I get past the 7 - 9 mark everything starts to flow better.

Now starting to look into Isotonics as the sqaush is not up to the job ( I sweat like a eskimo in a sauna)

Give Nuun tablets a go for the cramp :)
  • I commute 50 minutes each way.

When I'm on longer rides I go through a period of aches, pains and tiredness that starts around 50 minutes in, it wears off after a few minutes and I'm fine for ages.

I reckon that doing the commute for years has tuned my body to complain if I ride for longer than it was expecting me to.

So don't want to pinch the thread, but if you go through a period as described by the OP does it coincide with your commute time?

I'm not familiar with Seven Mile Syndrome, but it does sound similar to Six Mile Bottom, which is about... six miles from here :D

I just have to be awkward and the odd one out, it takes me about 9 miles to warm up properly, if I don't then I get pains in my calves.

Problem is that when a few mates ride around to my home they have already warmed up and can't be doing with you riding a steady 16-18 mph until you are warmed up.

I use Nuun for long endurance events - but I'd be surprised if you're cramping after 7 miles ?

My last pair of bib longs used to restrict the flow of blood to my knees and cause them to ache.

I only realised when I made a weather misjudgment for a sportive and rode the whole thing wearing them in warm weather. My knees were in agony for days.

Not cramping after 7, it was about 20 miles into a 30, yet went out on a 40 the next day and did not have any major probs. however I did feel it toward the end when I tried to put i quick sprint in

Thanks for the answers - looks like i'd best lengthen the warmup routine, see if that helps

+1 for Nuun . Use them on sportives. Much better than the sickly sweet isotonic drinks.
A racing mind in a touring body.
