U-Brake Compatibility

I've got an old steel mountain bike that just won't die. It's become the bike that I now ride most frequently as it's just such a darned good all-rounder.
I'm thinking about modernising some of the components as it's mostly original kit but the rear brake is vexing me somewhat. The front brake is a canti, so I have a choice of V-brakes or a Magura hydraulic. Is there any kind of modern, more powerful brake that will fit on chainstay bosses that are positioned for a U-brake?
It's a work bike and often gets ridden with loads of luggage, and a trailer sometimes, so I need something with a bit more poke.

not really just BMX brakes."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

You could pop on a set of rigid forks and fit a disc...0

The forks are already rigid and not a problem. It's the rear brake that I'd like to change.
One idea that did occur to me, although a tad extreme, is to go with an XtraCycle.
Nicklouse, thanks for such a quick reply. Hearing that advice from you makes it a pretty definitive answer.0 -
In that case, you could fit a disc with one of the a2z adaptors, or get a disc mount welded on (i did that for my white inbred) or just run an HS33 or an HS11 which is really cheap.0

As its a steel frame u can get V brake or even disc mounts welded onto the frame quite easily and will open up a world of modern possibilites brake wise and prolong the life of the old steed even longer.0
