Hi,

After my last outing (A very muddy Sunday at Cannock) my Pop Loc appears to have given up.

I have replaced the cable and it locks out fine, but when I release it it jams. It releases but the cable isnt tight and sticks out from the lever.

Whats going on here? Seemed like a simple fix but it now doing my head in.

Cheers

is it the cable sticking or the dial not returning.

I have the same problem with mine, quite common from what I hear. Cable stick's and as a result the lockout lever does not return to its original position and from what I can see remains locked out. Can be a real pain.

whip the inner cable out, dismantle and re-assemble.
  • Pretty much as described by Nick.

The lever releases and the dial goes all loose.

Tried re-assembling a couple of times. No success.

err I was asking you what happens.

I find on mine that once you press the lever to turn it off you need to pull up on the bars to get it to snap back.

Like Nick says check what it is - dial not returning on the spring or the cable not allowing it to go back - easy to check if you undo - but a CPITA to refit the same cable after
  • Sorry Nick, was looking at the post below yours.

Yes, the pop loc lever locks the fork but when you push the button the lever remains loose, the cable appears to be too long. The fork remains locked out.

Before this I did tend to have to bounce the fork to release it but now it just doesnt actuate as it should.

Dirt under the blue turny dial on the forks.

Remove clip, turny bit, clean and reassemble.

Have the same problem with my revs.
  • You're probably right ride_whenever, but I cant take it to bits to clean it because whoever built my bike has managed to round off another allen nut. Bell ends.

The blue dial does not spin back to the un-lock position so it is more than likely dirt. If so I think its pretty crap. Where does Rock Shox think these forks will be ridden?

Don't think i'll bother with the pop loc again. Its never been very efficient.
  • Mine stopped working after half a year. Don't know whether yours is the same as mine, but when i clicked the 'grey button' to release the poploc, i have to also pull the wire through to unlock the suspension. I tried replacing the cable inner and outer and didn't work, so i persume you'll have to look at the internals if you haven't already done so.

  • Yeah, had mine just short of a year.

Think i'll ditch the pop loc and replace it with a manual lock off. I've never found it overly useful and now its not working it can go.

It happened to a friend of mine. Turned out it was the return spring inside the damper unit that had 'unhooked' itself. A right PITA to refit  but it works fine now.
  • Do you know if you can buy a manual dial to replace the pop loc?

I do a lot of training in the week on the road so require a lock off.

You shouldnt have to dis-assemble part of your fork just for a pop lock should you.

See the FAQ. I used the guide there for my Pike.

Edit: actually it was a pictorial guide by a guy called PeterPoddy over on another forum, but the one here works. I just need pictures sometimes when the fettling frustration sets in

Yes, you can buy a friction stack unit that uses friction rather than a return spring.

or you can read the topic in the FAQs about removing the spring.
