ONE of Britain’s leading child protection experts, Dr Colin Hawkes, died in a road accident in Holloway while cycling to work on Wednesday morning.

Dr Hawkes, 64, was on the way to his office at a children’s charity when he was in collision with a silver Peugeot in Carleton Road at the junction with Pleshey Road, opposite the Hilldrop estate, at 8am.

The driver of the car, a 34-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed to return to a north London police station on a date in May.

Tragic. Wasteful.

That's a hefty commute for a 64 year old!

So many deaths so far this year. I wonder if there have been more than usual or if they are just being reported more?

    I hope its the latter.

Reported more and probably because the cyclists involved have/nad more visible public profiles. Gary Mason (fairly famous Boxer) and Dr Colin Hawkes brings it home to the non-cyclists.

It does seem that everyone (drivers) have seemingly forgotten 2010, the rise in the number of cyclists and the all the campaigns, launch of the superhighway. Way I'm treated on the road at times feels like we're starting from zero again.

This scene of this accident is less than half a mile away from my front door, and on my route to and from work. Last Wednesday morning the entire road was cordoned off at 8:30 with several police vehicles and an ambulance in attendance.

I struggle to understand how a fatal collision happened on what I've always felt is a very safe bit of road. It's unlikely the victim was travelling more than about 15mph, and I can only assume that the driving involved was either woefully inattentive or deliberately malicious. Whatever the circumstances, it's a tragic outcome.

    RIP.

There does seem to be something in the air. I've noticed some appalling driving so far this year, lots of "must overtake cyclist" moves in totally inappropriate places.

A good friend was knocked off his bike in West London last week, he's now in hospital with broken hip and collar bone.

    Take care out there people.

Very sad, heard about this via the death of the chap on the A38. Both a tragic loss.

    Milena Gott: “amazing”

An Aberdeen student has died more than 18 months after she was knocked off her bike by a lorry.

Milena Gott suffered serious injuries to her hips and legs when a tanker hit her at the Garthdee roundabout on July 2, 2009.

Doctors told her she would never walk again and the 22-year-old, who was originally from Poland, remained confined to her hospital bed. After more than a year of operations, she died in hospital at the weekend – just two days after her legs were amputated.

Yesterday her sister Alice, 29, who lives in Manchester, described her as “happy and clever” and said she would never be forgotten.

“We are all so upset. She was a lovely girl,” she said. “She was the best sister I could have ever asked for. My mum is heartbroken.

“She was an amazing person who didn’t deserve any of this. She was always there if I needed her.

“It’s absolutely devastating. She was loved so much and she will never be forgotten.”

Ms Gott, who had been transferred from Aberdeen to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, had hoped to return to the north-east and become a psychologist.

Her final operation proved too much for her weak body, her sister said.

“It’s awful. I don’t think it has sunk in,” she said.

“She was fighting for 18 months in hospital, but her injuries were just too much. The doctors had to amputate her leg as the infection became so bad.

“But just two days after the operation she didn’t wake up. It was too much for her body to handle. The operation was too tough for her heart.”

Tanker driver Richard Fox, was fined £340 last April at Aberdeen Sheriff Court after he admitted careless driving.

He said he had not checked his mirrors properly.

Fox, whose address was given in court as 2 Woodland Way, Denny, Stirlingshire, admitted driving without reasonable consideration for other road users at the junction of South Anderson Drive and Holburn Street.

Ms Gott had been taken to hospital under police escort.

Her funeral will be at Maryhill Crematorium in Glasgow at 1.45pm on Thursday.

One of the busiest roundabouts in Aberdeen and because it's pretty large traffic moves quite fast on it. A very difficult place to cycle. Poor girl :-( Aberdeen generally isn't too bad a place to cycle around.

    Tragic news,

But that really is a very large assumption.
