2009 trek ex8 abp rear bearing issue

Hi there, in the process of building up a 2009 trek ex8.Was talking about it to a mate on a ride the other day,and he told me that he had heard of some issues regarding the rear abp system and the hub bearings not having much longevity
My question is; has anyone else had any issues? and if so, does anyone know of any better ones on the market which i can purchase.
From what i have read, the issue with the bearings is that they are not designed for our terrain and conditions, and so are not sealed so well, some people have had them seize and others have just said that they do not last long.
Any info is muchly appreciated, as this bike i am building has not been cheap.
