okay, so my bike isnt shifting properly so have taken it to two bike shops, one says it can be cleaned and the gear cables replaced and the chain and rear cassette are fine compared to the other one who says the chain is completely gone so the rear cassette will need replacing too aswel as the cables?! what would you do?!

Change the chain and cassette, forget about it and ride.0

Do the cables first, and see
You can clean them at home for free. If it still doesn't work, change the chain and cassette.0 -
I'd have a look at sheldon's page on chain maintenance
have a quick measure of chain stretch yourself although in this case looking at it yourself with the help of Sheldon's pictures should give you an idea even if you're not happy sorting the new chain/cables/cassette etc. yourself.
General drivetrain info from sheldon available here0 -
what gear cables would i need to buy to replace the current ones? thanks0
-
You've prob got a regular 9 spd setup?
Any LBS will sell them. A gear cable inner is what to ask for. Clarks are good VFM.
Flush out your outer cable too. Nosel of WD/GT85 and squwert through each section.0 -
my lbs said they would be £25, any suggestions on where i could buy them cheap?
and its an 8 speed0 -
For what exactly?0

25quid will be a fitted price. Parts cost maybe a fiver for inners only or 8 quid for inners and outers.0

It might not be then you get them to fit it and they sting you with an even higher price. Best to ask before they start.
TBH, you are best doing it yourself, it's a useful skill to have or at least ask them to show you how to do it, most LBS's are happy enough to do this so long as they are not super busy so go at a quiet time. Make sure to take some cakes or beer as well, you would be surprised how far a bit of cake can get you0 -

This might not be the issue. i.e. it might not solve any of the problems you're having.
+you need some spacialised cutters to do this - ordinary plier cutters usually don't suffice.0 -

Good point, you can normally get through them, but it leaves the end messed up, so it doesn't go though the outer nicely.
Something like this will do, but this particular seller has slightly iffy feedback.

Easiest thing to do is clean the cables! Oil them. See how you get on.0

TV: as above- learn some new skills, you'll be glad some day.
Start with a new inner (£2ish), if you have a Screwfix near you then this is a real bargain:
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/27403/Han ... rs-150mm-6
For £5.60 you'll get a life time of use cutting wires, cable ties, generally tough stuff.
Also get / borrow a can of GT85 or similar so long as it has the red straw on the can and blast through the existing outers.
Try cleaning out the outers and learn how to fit the inner. In my honest opinion it may not work and you'll have hearnt a whole not for £7.60 and will have a great £5.60 tool for the next 10+ years.
ime the first thing my lbs does (I watch them as others come in) is pull a chain checker out and check your current chain. There's an old guide about chains .75% worn, 1.00 worn and worse. You may have fallen in the middle somewhere and one shop is taking the optomistic route, the other is probably more honest. But call them and discuss. If it was me I'd take the opinion of whoever took the longest term approach - or offer you the "run til it dies" option - thats your choice.0
