    Hi Knacknar

I'm near the Winchester area just up the road, normally ride on the southdowns most weekends which is pretty good.

If you want to come along one weekend you're more than welcome.

Also if you're new to the scene Swinley Forest is only a short drive away just off the M3 and has a good mix of fireroad and single track

See you out on the trails

+1 for basingstoke. I am absolutely new to this. It's been years since i have been on a bike. I am looking for something easy to start up with..... I plan to rent a bike and give this a shot...

Timus , can you let me know what kind of rides are around basingstoke ?

    Cheers!

The following link is to the Hampshire County Council website, with lots of trails near Basingstoke and Andover.

    http://www3.hants.gov.uk/cycling/cyclin ... aflets.htm

Just download the ones you need.

If you are also looking for areas between Basingstoke and Andover, you could try Black Wood (Near Popham, between the A33 and A303). Although not the biggest riding area, Black Wood has fireroads and a selection of singletrack. There is an Enduro motorbike event there this weekend (20th) and the motorbikes will clear all the singletrack, which should be fairly easy to follow. It tends to be under used by Mountain Bikers and therefore the singletrack can disappear under leaves in the autumn and winter.

  • If theres a guide to a basingstoke/newbury area and they are fairly good routes I would be up for it, im just down the M3 but can commute..

I hear a place called Dummer? Come up all the time..

Dummer is a small village just off Junction 7 of the M3. You can park on the road into Dummer just after the Queens Inn pub. From Dummer you can ride the Abbotstone Down and Candovers routes. There are numerous byways and bridleways between Dummer and Alton/Alresford. The Abbotstone Down trail also links with Oxdrove and Ellisfield trails.

I decided to ride at Black Wood this morning and the 12 mile trail loop is now clearly visible thanks to the motorbikes that were there last weekend. The trail is easy to follow, as you just have to follow the motorbike tracks and it is mostly singletrack with a couple of fireroad sections. The ground is a bit draggy in places, as the soil is loose from the where the motorbikes have turned it over but overall the trail is nice to ride.

No, the motorbikes are only there on a couple of organised events each year. They are not allowed in the wood at other times.

If you are at Odiham, you are only a couple of miles from Caeser's Camp. From Odiham follow the A287 (Odiham Road) towards Fleet/Farnham/Aldershot. After a couple of miles you will get to a roundabout (The 1st since Odiham). If you go straight over the roundabout, Caesers Camp is on your left. If you turn left at the roundabout (onto Beacon Hill Road) Caesers Camp is on your right.

    Hi Guys
Gonna go cycle around carpenters down woods in popley this sunday about 10:30 if anyone interested . Its not to big or hilly to start off if you not been cycling for a while (like me) , there are some rides posted on the council website that I have not tried yet . Maybe we could all get together on a Sunday morning to go for a short ride and decide on the next trip out . I have done swinley woods in Bracknell and its great and only costs a few quid for you cycle permit . timus41@hotmail.com if you wanna get intouch .

I'm up for a ride tomorrow.. either Black Wood or the MBR route from Dummer...

Went to Black Wood today and it was holding up ok after the overnight rain. It was starting to look pretty overgrown in places and the trail was covered in leaves etc. making it a bit hard to make out, but still doable..

Haven't tried the Dummer MBR route yet.. any good?

Wouldn't mind making it a bit earlier than 10:30 though.. leaves more of the day free and it should be nicer while it's cooler - it was exceptionally humid in BW today!

Up for Black wood if you like , never been there myself so need to know where to meet and what time (0945 would be ok for me) . Only done the Dummer route on Thursday and don,t really know it to do it again without a route map .
    Cheers
