commentates on himself while cycling? It's a sad admission for a 38 year old, but it is something I have done subconsciously since I was a child, normally when I was playing football on my own in the garden.

I hadn't realised I did it while cycling until this weekend when I found myself saying to myself 'He has really got the hammer down here, what a stunning breakaway' I looked down and checked my computer and I was going 16mph, so not exactly the world's greatest ever breakaway I must admit! I actually went red when I realised what I was doing

So am I a child trapped in the body of a 38 year old or do others secretly commentate?

  • It would appear I am a freak :D

I will go and give myself a good talking to, or is that making matters worse?
  • Any chance of you recording one of your commentaries and posting it so that we can....errr.....analyse your problem more accurately? I promise we won't laugh or anything, and who knows, it might be the beginning of a wonderful new career for you!

  • Unless anyone has got an app that allows internal dialogue to be recorded, then I am a bit stuffed as it is in my head and not out loud - out loud would be just plain weird.

I don't do it deliberately, it is subconscious often when I am on a long solo ride just to take my mind off the effort I think.

was'nt there a couple who recorded his rambling when asleep and have published it and have merchandising etc - made a fortune..... is this a secret plan to fund your next carbon road bike ? That would be clever if you hadnt underestimated the percentage of Yorkshiremen and Scots on the forum, who wont pay owt for nowt!

If you do it as a visualisation thing to help you work harder to achieve a better result/performnace then it is probably more common that people here are admiting. It is a technique encouarged by some sports psycologists. However it is more often structured as a forward looking thing rather than a commentary on the here and now.

I like to pretend the gradient is higher than it is so my actual speed is more like that of the pros...

You could pass it off as Police Driver Training if you really don't fancy being labelled a nutter. One of the core skills is a running commentary on hazards & obstacles encountered on the road. It's pretty difficult to keep it up for long periods, but it does mean that you become very aware of potential problems sooner rather than later. That, or you're known locally as that cyclist that shouts at cars. Probably.

If the quality of your self-commentary is as good as that of the "pros" on ITV Sport, presumably you regularly mistake yourself for other riders?? :D

Absolutely - "just look at Bomptani attacking up that hill, what a speed he's going at, what IS he on?"
  • Funnily enough the voice of the internal commentary does appear to be that of Phil Liggett and thus far there have been no cases of mistaken identity, although he does occasionally lapse into referring to me as young.

I can't believe nobody else commentates in their head - I just assumed everyone did it.
  • Sparkins, you arent.

I do it all the time when on the bike, whether it be the turbo or on road. Though generally the commentary turns into more of a beasting session like the seargent from 'Full Metall Jacket' when it comes to a hill and it hurts. Sometimes he's not very nice .....
Its Italian, its carbon.....and some lanky tool rides it.
