boardman hybrid team replacement bottom bracket

I've just had a voicemail from halfords to advise that the mashing sound that I'm getting when pedalling is due to my bottom bracket being trashed.
I know that strictly speaking these are perishable items and will wear out, however
A) the bike isn't even 8 months old.
it has been serviced and cleaned regularly.
C) I'm not the heaviest rider....13 stone
But.....
A) its been ridden through wet, dirty, muddy Manchester each day, 30 miles per day.
total miles for bike is approx 1300
I must say I'm a little disappointed to be having to replace something like this so soon, would you guys agree?
So that kind of leads onto the next question.....what would you recommend I replace it with.? Does it have to be sram again? Can I get a sealed unit that would be compatible?
Do you think its worth penning a letter to boardman bikes to see what they say?

Boardman will tell you to speak with the shop you bought it from, sounds like light use and you may get a warranty replacement. If they do offer to replace it, ask if you can also put money towards a better BB; 8 months/1300miles is pretty low.
Lifespan is also as much about how the bike is stored/looked after between rides as what you do when riding. A colleague's expensive carbon-fibre Storck used to fill up with half a litre of water when used in the rain, which gathers around the BB shell.FCN16 - 1970 BSA Wayfarer

New BB from £20ish (it seems it takes a GXP)"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Getting it replaced under warranty, fair play to Halfords - good service
Looks like water damage, any suggestions on how to avoid in the future? I never jet wash the bike so can only presume that the water is from the daily grind.
There is no chance the wife will let me store the bike in the house nice and warm, so it will have to stay in the garage for now.0 -
the new Sram BBs have better seals but not much can be done."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Just spoken to Halfords again, theyve sourced a Hope bottom bracket and adapter and will supply and fit for £50
Sometimes I think people are too quick to jump on the back of Halfords staff. Some of them are actually ITK. Well done Halfords0
