Hi

I don't know absolutley anything about bikes, but I have the Scott Sportster 55 and want to change the front delivery from:-

Shimano FD-TX51

to

Shimano Deore Front Derailleur Conventional M591

My chainset is current Shimano FC-M171 48/38/28 (will eventually replace this too)

Would this be possible?

If the same clamp size, pull and swing, and for a 48t ring, then definitely yes. But it will be narrower than what you have, and may cause rubbing.

I wouldn't bother unless what you have is dead.

    Damn....

    what about this one:-

Shimano SLX triple front derailleur - conventional swing
•Tough, aggressive and light weight All-Mountain dual pull multi-fit front derailleur
•Conventional swing wide link design pivots for greater torsional rigidity, improved shifting response and greater service life
•Dual pull design allows it to be used with top or bottom cable routing
•Multi clamp band is compatible with all frame dimensions
    •Triple specific front derailleur
•Angled adjustment screws for easy access on suspension frames
•Specifically developed for 68 and 73 mm bottom bracket shells with a 50 mm chain line
•66-69 degree chainstay to seat tube angle range
•For outer chainring size from 44 to 48 tooth, total capacity 22 teeth

Sorry (I told you I knew nothing)

Same as above - is narrower and may rub more.

    But yes, should fit.

    Same again...

Why are you wanting to change it? There's very little point unless yours is dead, as SS said.

Because I neglected to clean my bike correctly during the snow and a few eroded parts need replacing :(

What should I be looking for so I know it will work and I don't have to keep bothering everyone on here?

as sonic said in his post.
same clamp size, pull and swing, and for a 48t ring
so a Deore M590 MTB top swing - dual pull will work as it is 48T compatible and has the same swing and will fit any of the three tube sizes and can be pulled either way.

What's the 'rubbing' he mentioned, will that affect it?

Where they are not made to function perfectly together like say mega9 and mega9, they still will work, they just might rub at the extemes due to slight diamension differences.

8spd chains are wider than 9spd chains.

so you may get a bit more rub with a 9spd mech.
